To be clear: a tariff is a tax.

I find it quite striking that we haven’t heard anything from the EU Commissioner for #Defense, Android Kubilius. A role that was created this mandate.

Trump’s foreign policy is a classic example of Hegemonic Stability Theory.
Taxing the colonies too heavily is one of the things that broke the Ottoman empire in the end - they resented it and broke free
This is such a tought-provoking and good thread.

Trumps policy may be built on the idea that the USA cannot compete with China and so it’s better to withdraw, and coerce remaining allies (Canada) into complete submission in a smaller yard.

Very different from Biden.

Delaying Mexican tariffs but not Canadian puts the lie to the idea that the tariffs have anything to do with fentanyl flows (since there are effectively no fentanyl flows across the northern border and there plenty across the southern border.) It was all an empty pretext anyway. This just proves it.

How Russian talking points went from fringe and laughable to mainstream and US policy in the span of a few years will analysed for decades to come.

JD Vance gave Europe a generational opportunity for Europe to transform itself and clam relevance once more - a cunning politician would spot that.

But all will be in vain if it doesn’t tackle one of the root cause of EU irrelevance - its deeply flawed institutional architecture.

So US and Russia strike a deal, 🇷🇺 sees lifting of sanctions and gains land, 🇺🇸 gets hold of critical raw minerals and UK mines, and 🇪🇺 gets to send troops without security guarantees?
🇪🇺🇺🇦 WEIMAR+ nations (France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, UK & EU) reaffirm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty & security. They commit to aiding Ukraine until a just, lasting peace is reached—one that protects both Ukraine & Europe. Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength.
