The Dark History of The Monkey House
My final story as it appeared in The New Republic on December 2, 2019. Despite the difficulties of getting it into print, it still stands as one of my best pieces ever, enhanced by new, unseen photos.

The trick to be taken seriously is to act seriously, something the election deniers don't seem to be capable of doing.
I’ll take these theories seriously when the advocates of them submit papers to legitimate, refereed journals and propose actual, as opposed to handwavy pie in the sky, mechanisms of action.

For now I’m with election security experts like @mattblaze.org who hasn’t seen anything close to reasonable.

Would be great if there was a recording of this lecture! Smart Legislation,a “government organization”lawsuit was dismissed(what took so long?)based on lack of standing. Further conspiracies about why Independent candidate dropped out of case in March have been pushed by @smartelections.bsky.social
Tomorrow in my election security course we dissect election denial BS, always fun. I'm grateful to the "election truth" conspiracy people for keeping the 2020 dream alive in 2024, giving us a steady stream of new (actually recycled) material. The pillow guy gets old after a while.

Holding up the mirror to Dick Cheney’s legacy:

Here lies Dick Cheney,
Architect of the imperial presidency,
Who claimed Nixon was wronged,
Restored the unitary executive,
Sanctioned torture and secret surveillance,
Tricked a nation into war,
And bent law and norms
In the name of defending America.

The only differences between these claims about 2024 and the claims that the election was stolen from Trump in 2020 are:

- The losing candidate isn't amplifying the BS this time.

- No one stormed the Capitol this time

- No one is offering discount coupons for lumpy mail-order pillows this time.

About me: I'm an election security expert with two decades of experience. I've led comprehensive security assessments on behalf of states of their voting tech. I've testified in congress several times about election vulnerabilities. I run a major election security conference.

The claims are BS.

"What's the harm?". The harm is that these supposed "suspicious patterns" aren't actually suspicious, but they're being misleadingly sold to disappointed voters to support a completely baseless conspiracy theory that degrades the democratic process.

A law that requires "age assurance" sounds reasonable and moderate. But if that law defines age assurance as requiring government ID verification, it's not moderate at all—it's mass surveillance. Here’s a guide to what all those terms mean: www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

If you've been following the wave of age-gating laws sweeping across the country and the globe, you've probably noticed that lawmakers, tech companies, and advocates all seem to be using different

That is the problem. There are some, who have been election experts for many years, amplifying this stuff. And others who know they’re doing it & say nothing. That is absolutely adding to the wildfire of misinformation.
I can't speak for anyone decision on how to respond to this nonsense. I personally, reluctantly, am publicly refuting it, at some risk of drawing otherwise undeserved attention to the underlying bogus claims. But I don't fault those taking a different approach, as long as they aren't ampifying it.

WTF
These guys get $50k signing bonuses.

Stephen Miller is telling them they have immunity and encouraging them to create chaos.

They get almost no training, many couldn’t pass an open book exam & they’re allowed to hide their faces.

They’re swinging assault rifles around in public.

Every state should have an #Independent commission to draw the districts, like they have in California.
For anyone North Carolinian, if you can be downtown today it is so important to attend the redistricting watch rally! Try to attend the committee meeting as well at 2pm and you can sign up to make a public comment.
