We’re torn because we don’t practice equitable habits on a daily basis. Boycotting is a strategy we’ve employed for years, but then what? We need to reprogram the way we consume, so that a boycott doesn’t disrupt our own economic progress and isn’t the ONLY way we exercise our own advocacy.

I urge folks to do their own research on these Pro-DEI/Anti-DEI company lists. Changes are happening quickly and in many cases, a lot of context is missing.

Every company is facing conservative pressure & any could cave. And as I’ve said before, my personal north star is Jamie Dimon/JPMorgan Chase.

More Black-owned products on major retail shelves. More Black suppliers in corporate supply chains. More Black franchises in our communities and beyond.

I’m not sure the strategy is to ask Black-owned businesses to abandon these opportunities. This feels very “cut off your nose to spite your face.”

McDonald’s is the latest to cut back its DEI strategy:

- No more “aspirational representation goals”
- Sunsetting a pledge around supply chain inclusion
- DEI team name change to the Global Inclusion Team

Meanwhile, Byron Allen is leading a $10B racial discrimination case that is going to trial.

DEI is under fire because “qualified” people are hiring a bunch of “unqualified” people? Probably too logical, but sounds to me like the problem isn’t the new hires.

Two things:

1) Walmart is gutting Supplier Diversity & no longer considering race and gender when granting supplier contracts.

2) Robby Starbuck — he’s pushing, threatening, and rallying his 700k+ followers.

We need to get organized for real if we want things to stabilize or change in our favor.

The reality of DEI backlash is that we won’t see the full impact immediately — corporations report DEI progress on a fiscal cycle, and we may not see the true effects until well into the next few years. For us, this means we must stay informed and ready to call out performative allyship.
