Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭

It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

I’m just sitting in shock processing this. Mike Lauer stood up for us and got fired. This is very sad to read and also I admire him so much for the heroic act of sending that memo. 😞
It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this:

Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪
NEW: In a further sign of turmoil at the NIH, Mike Lauer, who oversees the agency's $39 billion extramural budget that goes to research outside the NIH, has resigned effective tomorrow.

This comes after top NIH official Larry Tabak abruptly retired yesterday.

"Since Donald Trump took office a little more than three weeks ago, outlays have averaged $30bn a day. Compare that with the same period last year under Joe Biden: federal spending back then came to about $26bn a day. "

Alzheimer’s disease is non-partisan. Cancer is non-partisan. Diabetes is non-partisan. This is a short-sighted policy that could cost thousands of jobs and set biomedical research progress back by years. Contact your local representatives and urge them to stand against this dangerous policy.
What The NIH Cut To Indirect Cost Payments Could Cost Red States
The Trump administration’s decision to cap how much NIH will pay for indirect costs on university research grants would cost 10 red states more than $1 billion.

Here's the thing: whatever you think about indirects in research grants, suddenly mowing down indirect rates not just for future but for current grants is not even a pretence at reform.
National Institutes of Health radically cuts support to universities
Sudden and drastic change will make it hard for researchers to keep the lights on.

The U.S. has had probably the best university system in the world since the late 1940s; government investments (state and federal) drove that success.

That may have changed overnight. 🧵🧪
NIH cuts billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately
The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease.

Good time to remind you that the REASON why Elon is trying to cut funding for hospitals is bc he wants a tax cut.
Here are the 25 institutions that receive the most NIH funding (98% of HHS is NIH). Basically, they're large schools with large hospitals. They receive 50% of all NIH funding.

The @utah.edu has over 608 NIH grants, totaling over $275M dollars.

The latest Trump administration moves on NIH budgets remove close to $100M in funding immediately, when indirects already don’t cover the cost of research, and ultimately put all of that in jeopardy.
