We forget how high the auto racing fatality rate was. I just finished “Bill Vukovich: The Man Who Wouldn’t Lift,” and it’s amazing he lived to win two Indy 500s; he died in the 1955 race. 15 of the other 32 drivers died in race wrecks, all by 1961. It was insane to go 140 mph in what they had.
