Excited to listen to the new nutrition science book from @kevinh-phd.bsky.social & @juliabelluz.bsky.social !

It's rare I recommend a popular book about food and nutrition but this is an absolute must read for anyone interested in the science.

It's very bizarre that the admin pursued a leucovorin indication for children with cerebral folate deficiency and autism symptoms, not for general autism. CFD is rare and the diagnosis is confirmed by measuring folate levels in cerebrospinal fluid, which most general cases of autism won't have.

Kennedy is over on X trying to rile up his base to cover up the ACIP disaster this week by pretending that community water fluoridation policies are about medical freedom, when fluoride exists naturally in the water supply and we simply regulate therapeutic and upper limit thresholds.

Sad state of things when my first thought seeing this post, as a researcher in maternal health, wasn't that pregnant and lactating individuals are so underrepresented in studies but that I was worried for what this administration plans to do with data collected on exposures during lactation.

The Monnarez testimony is pretty wild. But even more unprecedented is the use of HHS social media in an all out blitz against her. I know we hear that this admin requires loyalty but this is full blown propaganda state to simultaneously destroy the reputation of a past director & suck up to Trump.

Already getting DMs with questions from patients and providers about 5-formylTHF/leucovorin & Autism. It's a prescription, the existing response rate in trials is variable and likely depends on dose, timing, folate receptor autoantibody titers, so I encourage getting involved w clinical trials

For anyone wondering how we got to the point of an HHS Director who's thinking about children's mitochondria when he looks at them.

There are so many academic medical centers complicit in how we got here because embracing the rise of bs integrative & functional medicine helped turn a profit.

Metabolic Assessment 101:
A) Assess Anthropometrics🟢
B) Assess Dietary Intake🟢
C) Assess Clinical Chemistries 🟢
D) Look at the pediatric patient to diagnose mitochondrial and inflammatory disease 🚫

This year's Annual Review of Nutrition is out and full of really great reads.

My contribution details the broad history of nutritional guidance in America & covers the forces (science/politics/culture) that have driven the evolution of nutrition guidance.

The attempted coercion to have children claiming 'god will provide' is particularly gross coming from Greene, a rep for Georgia that gets a failing grade on most metrics of maternal & infant morbidity/mortality and coverage of social policies. We get a little closer to the Handmaid's Tale every day.

how did we get to this point of the timeline where HHS is emphasizing eating fries with beef tallow instead of...not eating the very high kcal, very high energy density, very high sodium, otherwise low nutrient foods...
August 12, 2025 at 12:27 AM
HHS X account is tweeting that beef tallow fried potatoes are healthier than seed oil fried potatoes bc of handwavey mechanistic rationale based on the presence of oxidized lipid products & zero data with human health outcomes. Bonus points for shoehorned 1990s oxidative stress theories of disease.

important read from Christopher Duggan MD MPH @hsph.harvard.edu @bostonchildrens.bsky.social calling for societies in pediatrics & gastroenterology to speak up/ advocate during this era of mass funding cuts & undue vaccine skepticism that will inevitably increase morbidity/mortality across the globe

I've seen a number of folks talking about grants they/colleagues had cut & lists of those going around - plz share this effort by @brindabee.bsky.social & @realdoctormike.bsky.social to gather stories of cancelled research grants and clip these into a media campaign

Strongest evidence yet that we need more nutrition education for physicians.

Y'all the FDA hasn't banned any artificial dyes. What's actually happening is states like California and Virginia banned certain dyes and it led to a patchwork across the USA of what industry could sell where - industry hates this and have been working towards reformulating products.

MAHA reflects a real frustration of people on the nutrition-related chronic disease failings of America. But it couldn't be more crystal clear that the administration sees MAHA as political theatre, a tool to distract and score political points w/o actually making public health nutrition progress

Starbucks - a purveyor of largely sugar-sweetened and creamy coffee beverages, baked goods, and sodium/refined grain-loaded sandwiches - has 'very clean foods' per the HHS secretary and he's asking him to get rid of canola oil..
July 11, 2025 at 6:56 PM
As the Congress moves towards rolling back Medicaid and SNAP benefits for the poorest in society, offering up their health for billionaires tax breaks, our HHS secretary is congratulating makers of candies for removing synthetic dyes, an - at best- lateral health move. This is MAHA, dissonance-free
