Or, pay attention to media critics like me. We can tell you what is good reporting and we can also teach you how to figure it out for yourself. Surviving these times may require supporting good journalism wherever it sprouts.
And how exactly is the average person watching something from cbs supposed to discern what they produce is good, unbiased journalism and what is slanted right wing propaganda? Am I expected to double check all their reporting against independent journalists? If so, why not just skip the middle man?

If you think trans people are a danger to anyone and not fascists and patriarchs and billionaires and bullies and zealots, or think universities don’t have power to resist, you are being manipulated by the bad guys or you are choosing the wrong side of history, that’s it.

In light of the news on my first day of sabbatical: gender is a social construct, trans women are women, no amount of complying with authoritarians who pretend they will only strip some people but not you of rights will keep you safe. And in 2025 university administrators should know all of that.

But new Electoral Commission data tells very different story

Modern autocrats don’t always wear uniforms or rule by fear. They use elections, media control and polished images.

Understanding this “spin dictatorship” is key to protecting democracy, especially in the U.S, writes an expert on authoritarian regimes:
Autocrats don’t act like Hitler or Stalin anymore − instead of governing with violence, they use manipulation
Autocrats today are polished, appear mainstream and use the media, not overt repression or violence, to gain public support and consolidate power. They govern through a ‘spin dictatorship.’
