hello! my name is kazuma hashimoto and i'm a critic and features writer. my work can be found on polygon, ign, and siliconera, usually entailing some kind of deep dive into japanese media. i also work as a narrative design consultant and a narrative designer on cool stuff i can't talk about yet.
oh yeah, my intro post. so a lot has changed in the past year. i still work as a critic and features writer. i'm now a part-time editor too. still do narrative design and consultation, but do market analysis to help identify trends and create marketing strategies. 👍 i'm also always open for work

i'm gonna be real. if arc raiders or any game that has genai in it or was snuck in/patched out wins an award at TGA or game of the year, it's gonna be bad. the awards are meaningless to the average consumer. but to execs it's a huge deal and it'll be a signal for them to keep pushing for it.

I think this is a pretty pervasive problem beyond just games, which a) is definitely an issue; b) is another element of it feeling increasingly asked to solve things that are tangential to or even sometimes orthogonal to “make a good game”.
You wanna know why we're having nag line discourse in 2025? Because developers know we're fighting an attention economy war we'll lose no matter what. Players don't read, have TikTok open next to them, god forbid we are scared you miss something and then blame us for not giving you all the info.
