I will believe in the end of identity politics when steel and lumber (28,000 jobs and 105,000 jobs respectively) stop getting bailouts, while higher education (310,000 jobs) collapses in front of our eyes because it's full of ivory tower elites

The degree to which my mom lost contact with people and things because she couldn't manage constant changes in UI was so bad. E.g., her phone died, it was impossible to find a new one she could use.
something which doesn't get enough attention: as anyone who deals with elderly people knows, *any* upgrade - software or forced hardware - is like a nuclear bomb on their existence and is enraging
yah even 'better camera' which was the selling point for higher price/newer models has plateaued. at some point my decision will be 'replace battery or replace phone' but i won't actually need a hardware improvement

A W. Philly apartment building was destroyed in a suspected arson right after its tenants were evicted and the building sold to shell company. What is this, the ‘70s? Great reporting by Ryan Briggs and William Bender. www.inquirer.com/news/phil-pu...
Landlord Phil Pulley transferred ownership of West Philly apartments days before suspected arson, records show
Property records show the notorious landlord signed a deed transfer two days before the June 2025 fire. The new owners are now demolishing the building.

Important stuff, and it highlights how important governance reform will be to (re)building / saving US higher ed, but it's also important to note that donor pressure has been the key lever used by the right vs. HE for a decades now, especially the past c. 10 yrs. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/24/u...

Every University needs to reform its board of trustees. In what universe should the wealthy govern learning?
Handing the keys of governance to unqualified billionaires and allowing them to far exceed the proper role of the Executive Branch in dictating to other agencies (i.e. Musk/DOGE) or institutions of civil society (as with Rowan/ Compact) sure does not seem "populist."

The first real turning point for me after Obama's election was the refusal to prosecute those involved in the Bush era torture program
if there's a reason to keep up the "tribunals for all involved" discourse one such reason it is to put in stark relief how far away some of the Dem politicking is from the mood on the ground
eric swalwell said on msnow that a major goal of a dem majority after the midterms would be for ice masks to come off and badges to come out, this is insufficient

Wild to see Kimmel doing better than most others: "Where do we really see Trump’s ongoing proof that manhood in the fake patriarchy of decades past was a hollow shell? In the awful acquiescence of men who don’t have to obey him or bend the knee to him."

Not to rain on the dragging of Larry Summers, but I expect we might look back at this moment with some ambivalence.

Summers was sacrificed in part because technofeudalists believe they no longer benefit from economic epistemology.

We have reached the bitter end of orthodox economic reason.

Dept. of Ed is reclassifying all the female dominated professions (nurse, therapist, speech pathologist, PA) as not having “professional” degrees, which makes it harder for them to get educational loans.

Another FUCKED UP thing this admin is doing to attack women’s power.

Today I passed a CPB/ICE checkpoint on the Clara Barton Parkway—an unwelcome reminder of the administration's authoritarian aspirations.

But I wasn't surprised. A minute prior, I drove by a young man. He held a simple sign. Sharpie on poster board, written in thin, neat letters: "ICE Ahead"

This is really, really heartbreaking news.
The New School is now a place where students cannot major in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Global Policy & International Affairs, Global Studies, Urban Studies, or Environmental Studies. And more pauses, closures, and mergers coming down the pike this week. The future is uncertain.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

I find this pretty striking - we're not even offered the standard "here's why Mamdani's victory is actually trouble for the left" kind of gymnastics, the strategy really seems to be to hope no one notices
it is wild that Labour is doing exactly what the reactionary centrists recommend and is absolutely destroying its base of support as a result, and yet reactionary centrists in the US are just utterly silent about the complete failure of their program.
