I worked in social services for 15 years. Homeless, or housing insecurity, is most common when foster youth age out and have no shelter system access, which you want to gut further. Also, many are LGBTQ kids thrown out of their homes by their bigoted parents. Also something you have experience with.

Of the last 5 Senate-confirmed SecDefs (Austin, Esper, Mattis, Carter, Hagel) 4 are frontline combat veterans. Three were decorated for valor and one was 2x wounded. So spare me this hero costume shit.
