Happy Winter Solstice everyone.
One of my first oil paintings from 1996 of Avebury where I went to primary school. Being there had a profound influence on my work.
Lighter days ahead.

I listen to, watch adaptations of, and read Jane Austen's novels (remarkably, now that I come to think of it) most days. Her characters and stories are part of the landscape of my life, and her work is very special to me.

Day two of #ArtAdventCalendar. Here’s a print I made just under a year ago of a crow carrying a crescent moon. 🌙

Psst! Pumpkins are a treat for birds but can be harmful to hedgehogs. 🦔❌

Keep them high up out of reach and compost any leftovers to protect our garden wildlife.

It may be mid-October, but, as is fast becoming tradition, my single sunflower of the year has finally bloomed 💛😂🌻 #OctoberSunflower

Tonight, the Harvest Moon rises: the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. 🌕

October’s full moon is also named the Hunter’s Moon, once marking a time to gather food for winter.

It will be the first of three supermoons this year, glowing bigger & brighter.

A much-needed slow day of soft sunshine, excellent bird-spotting (did somebody say grey phalarope?!), and the singular joy of a new @peteralanross.bsky.social to read. Early-autumn at its finest.

😭💔 *waves*
Sporadic viewings since the end of July (the 28th being the final time I sat on the lawn watching the large group of ~30 adults and young swifts screeching together, somehow knowing in the moment it would be the last of the season and that they would soon be heading southward).
It's a farewell #FlyDay to the wonderful Swifts... already headed on their epic journeys south!

Safe travels, friends, we’ll be waiting for you next summer. 🌍

Just finished a re-read of 'Persuasion', and it was utter bliss 😌 I admire Anne Elliot so much (surely the most decent person in all of Austen?), and Captain Wentworth's confession at the end is, quite simply, pure romance. Such joy!

👏🏼SAMARA👏🏼JOY👏🏼 live on BBC Radio 3 and utterly smashing her Proms debut. What a *talent*. (Bringing a huge grin to my face and a much-needed lift to my evening!)

I always find this time of year hard knowing that they'll be going. But hold on to the wonder in the meantime (there's no need to be down as yet: I literally just saw two fly by the house, which elicited a big smile, of course).
The swifts will start to leave in numbers soon. We won’t see them go. And then, obviously, the countdown will begin again.

Wholesome thread combining two of my favourite things: birds and running 🪶🏃🏻‍♀️✨️ (Gotta commend the Corncrake meme in particular - that properly cracked me up!)
How different birds would run a marathon... a thread. 👇

Reckon you could outdo these birds? We're taking applications for London Marathon 2026 Team RSPB runners.

Follow the link to apply, you have 'til Sunday! 🏅

They are yet to arrive near me, but it could be any day now... my eyes are firmly on the skies!
There are five swifts circling overhead, occasionally giving out little skkwrreee sounds, and it’s ridiculous how much pleasure they bring.
