Blunt AI talk 2.0
I avoid Axios articles because they read like they've been copied and pasted directly from an LLM. But a friend sent me Jim VandeHei's letter to his children about AI, and it made me so spitting mad I...

We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

By who? Who shot the person dead? You saw the video. We all know a federal agent shot a man dead who was prone on the ground. Also, it's not "according to officials." It's according to verified video seen with your eyes. Not saying what anyone can obviously see with their eyes is a form of lying.

Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

Let’s be clear: anyone defending the Trump Administration after watching masked, anonymous agents assault a man, pepper spray him, then fire 5+ rounds into his back is irretrievably complicit in political terrorism.

Karla said it so well.

I (Ben) was thrilled to testify on the technical side, demonstrating with algorithms, real code and benchmarks on why data privacy is possible at scale. Sharing that room with Danny Lin, Jason George, and so so many talented and skilled creatives was a genuine honor.

Deleted a repost of a thread.

Looking closer, the person is comfortable sharing AI images & video. Was the thread also AI? Was it accurate?

I’d rather not take the chance and share it.

Journalists, keep this in mind. “Fun” AI videos & images undercut your credibility.

'Personalization at scale' sounds 'fun' but is really just going to destroy commonality and exacerbate the divides and delusions already caused by people being spoon fed their particular algorithm until they think that's the reality we all live in. Yay.
David and Larry Ellisons’ sloptastic vision for Hollywood is coming into focus:

“Paramount has reportedly signed a $200M+ multiyear deal for Higgsfield AI to use mass-use Popcorn AI model that ingests dailies and script notes, then outputs regional cuts: new leads, alternate jokes, revised endings”

I hate these charts so much because they imply chatgpt is comparable to the internet or phones

You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet
In 2025, AI became pervasive in American life and the economy, with ChatGPT surging in adoption much faster than any other major technology in memory. @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

It was amazing to write with @ehayot.bsky.social & each of us put our stank into every part of this essay.

I have no memory of how we drafted it in October, but when we came back to it a couple weeks ago, I felt this paragraph in my bones.
