While the rest of the country is recognizing President’s Day, in Arkansas, it Daisy Lee Gaston Bates Day.Bates was a civil rights activist who helped desegregate Central High School. Her statue, along with one of Johnny Cash, represents Arkansas in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall.

🧵The debate over the failure to place a plaque honoring the agencies that defended the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 is a wonderful case study on the difference between history and memory. In 2022, Congress authorized the a plaque for the west front of the Capitol complex by March 2023. 🗃️

Confederate general Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia included more than 10,000 enslaved laborers when it marched into the free state of Pennsylvania in late June 1863. But please, tell me more about how 'Confederates fought for the right to govern themselves.' LMAO 😂😆😂😆

What is worse than Republicans mistakenly referring to the Confederate monument in Arlington National Cemetery as a "Reconciliation monument," is the fact that they fail to acknowledge that the lie of the "faithful slave" helped to encourage that reconciliation between white Americans by 1914. 🗃️
