I keep seeing this circulating, and I'm disappointed in my colleagues in the natural sciences who think if they can "shed" enough of their humanity they will some how be protected from fascism.

Scientists who are bending to jingoism to try and protect funding aren't asking the right questions.
In which a Yale prof calls for jettisoning humanities to make way for science-only universities.

“scientists… are being punished for the sins of [humanities scholars] because we all live under one roof. I cannot see a compelling reason for our continued cohabitation.”

Arts and sciences typically cohabitate. Should they?

As of a few weeks ago, climate researchers thought they had at least until Sept before DOD cut off its passive microwave weather satellite data, used to track sea ice since the 1980s.

Now the cut off is coming in 5 days. Hope more reporters will cover now.

HUD secretary's hostile takeover of the NSF building have angered NSF employees

Call your Senators and House Reps to point out what an egregious example of waste, fraud, and abuse this would be. HUD Sec Turner is asking for extensive renovations including a private elevator, gym, and luxury dining room for himself and his cronies.
NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years.

NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."

NSF's policies under the present administration are now actively antithetical to American science.

This is a direct violation of 42 USC 1862p-14: Broader Impacts Review Criterion.

And, as obliquely admitted by the FAQ, the Civil Rights Act + Constitution.

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
NSF has posted an “update on priorities.”

They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants.

And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent.

🧪 I just saw a specific NSF grant termination letter and it is FUCKING WILD.

The letter said "not subject to appeal", which is a **blatant** violation of NSF's own policies and broader cross-agency regulations (regulation below): www.ecfr.gov/current/titl...

NSF just opened itself up to lawsuit.

This statement from the NSF is insane.

Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false.

Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

My NSF CS for All grant was just terminated (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...).

Nationwide, we were:
• Improving the quantity + quality of K-12 CS teachers
• Ensuring the sustainability of K-12 CS teacher prep programs
• Ensuring all youth in the U.S. have access to great CS teachers

It’s essential to revive this earlier point:

NSF is REQUIRED BY LAW to evaluate all proposals for broader impacts. DOGE will likely ask/make NSF break the law. And it’s key for members of Congress and the public to know that.

More NSF-specific legal context: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...
First off, it's critical to note:

NSF is CONGRESSIONALLY MANDATED to evaluate proposals via broader impacts, as defined by this law below.

Hence, if the admin wants NSF to deviate, that's called **breaking the law** (important to remind Congress of that)

A court hearing this afternoon could be pivotal for NSF staff terminated illegally. A colleague’s declaration of harm is in Document 18, attachment 9 and speaks for a lot of us who were fired from NSF.
