SIPTU calls on Government and education policymakers to heed the demands of tomorrow’s protest. That means, reducing or eliminating student fees; tackling the accommodation crisis; addressing insecure work in the sector and investing in a sustainable, fair model of third-level education.

We reject the false narrative that student needs must come at the expense of staff, or vice versa. A high-quality, inclusive education system depends on both accessible learning for students and decent working conditions for staff.

We also highlight the serious pressures faced by workers across higher education, many of whom are SIPTU members. University staff are dealing with insecure contracts, & rising costs in daily life. These issues mirror those faced by students & working families & are part of the same broken system.

This is not sustainable and it is not fair. SIPTU supports the call for a publicly funded, accessible third-level education system where no one is locked out of learning due to financial barriers.
