2025 is already generous in surprises!

Jan 1st: Impressive northern lights (see my previous post)
Jan 2nd: Snow ❄️ (Orkney rarely gets snow)

Can't wait to see what else 2025 has in store for us! 😁

I'm so sad that John Barrett has died. It was he who wanted me in Sheffield and for that, I will forever be grateful. His contribution to archaeology has been huge but it's the man who I like to remember - to me, he was invariably supportive, nice, & friendly. Thank you, John. I'll miss you badly.

If archaeology was radio, the Tollund Man would be Radio Classic.

One of the best preserved natural mummies in the world, the Tollund Man died around 405–384 BC during the pre-Roman Iron Age. His body was buried under 2 m of peat and arranged in the fetal position.

There’s something extraordinary about this otherwise pretty standard Late Bronze Age axehead:

A human fingerprint. A real, visible and tangible connection to someone from 3000 years ago. If that doesn’t give you goosebumps, idk what will. 🥹
