#Spiritualabuse is hard to define because it’s so complex & can occur in any spiritual setting or relationship. Here is a brief definition I compiled. In my book, I explain why I chose each word/phrase. You will notice I don't use language specific to any religious group. What resonates with you?
For too long, spiritual abuse has been dismissed, minimized, and misunderstood.
We need this conversation.
We need awareness.
We need action.
I encourage you to listen.

When a church or denomination says “We handled it internally," what they are saying is, "We protected the abuser and institution, not the survivor(s)."

If Jesus prioritized the vulnerable, why do so many churches prioritize the powerful? A church that protects power over people has lost sight of the gospel.

January is Spiritual Abuse Awareness Month. I believe awareness of this form of abuse is critical for church health, so I encourage you to learn about it.

Knowing I research spiritual abuse, people often point me toward resources that perpetuate harm. I was recently given a booklet called “Correction & Discipline of Children” (John R. Rice, 1946). It is one of the most alarming & heartbreaking original sources I’ve ever read.

Sitting by the fire and drinking homemade salted maple lattes while I finish writing the course development for Assessment Techniques. What a great day.

Last paragraph.

“If you are/have been a victim of sexual abuse or suspect sexual abuse by a pastor, staff member or member of a Southern Baptist church or entity…”

Contact law enforcement.

Report abuse to the proper authorities- which the SBC hotline is not.

Wanna make America great? Proceed in humility. Listen. Consider others as more important than yourself. Love others as yourself. Treat others as you want to be treated.

This is your gentle reminder that

Gratitude and grief can walk together.

They do not cancel each other out.

You can count your many blessings

Even as you name your losses.

Sorrow alongside thanksgiving is not ingratitude.

My 18 year old brought me a peppermint milkshake tonight just because he knows it’s my favorite. 🥹🥰 Small gestures mean so much.

Any other #spiritualabuse researchers or survivors on here? I took down my research related posts from the other site to avoid the new policy.
