Here’s something I hadn’t considered before…

We see oil derricks and pump jacks all over the province, with hostile gravel and unfertile soil all around them… but when you see solar panels and wind turbines you see houses with lawns, gardens, pastures, and fields all around them.

I wonder why […]

In incredible news, the European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly for "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women."

Even the center-right European People's Party voted for the declaration.

It will form a foundation for their position at the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Our latest.

The resolution, though nonbinding, is a significant shot at those who seek to erode transgender rights on the continent.

Defending the Right to Read | Edmonton Public Library https://www.epl.ca/blogs/post/defending-the-right-to-read/
Defending the Right to Read
What’s the most important celebration in February? No, it’s not Valentine’s Day... it’s Freedom to Read Week! Every year, libraries and partners around Canada spend the last week of February honouring our country’s strong traditions of free expression and free inquiry. Here at Edmonton Public Library we’re passionate about Intellectual Freedom and we can’t imagine a world without it. We’re also passionate about our partnerships, which is why we’re incredibly excited to be partnering with Metro Cinema on a special event during Freedom to Read Week. On Friday, Feb 27th, Metro Cinema and Edmonton Public Library will be showing Kim A. Snyder’s 2025 acclaimed documentary _The Librarians_, which follows a group of librarians in the United States uniting to combat book banning amid unprecedented censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond. Our panelists include: * Vicky Varga (Executive Director, Collections & Technology, Edmonton Public Library) * Murray Utas, Artistic Director of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival * Arianne Smith-Piquette, Content Director at CKUA Radio * Peter Midgley, author, editor and translator * Moderator: Tara McCarthy, CBC Radio One Purchase Tickets!

And usually, what we tend to do is we talk about servers and decentralisation and federation and ActivityPub and all these highly technical concepts.

I've been thinking about it […]
