Damn. Rest in peace Michael Burawoy. I still love your Manufacturing Consent, which was so influential on me as a baby proto-academic.

About time. Never mind the party politics, Surf Lifesaving culture needs to take another very hard look at itself. Much respect to the victims for seeing this tough thing through, and Louise Nicholas too.

I love public health. Kid was misdiagnosed for 6 months in the semi-private primary care system before we threw ourselves at Starship Emergency, where his actual life-threatening condition was seen and dealt with. 5 ops and probably hundreds of thousands of dollars later he is doing just fine. 🙏
I love our public health system. My daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma & once she received her diagnosis she was swiftly treated with the best docs & meds available. I didn’t have to think about what the financial cost would be, and nor should anyone ever have to think about that
I love our public health system. Our oldest is a heart kid, and in those awful hours after he was born there was never a question about whether he’d be treated.

Academia is evidence-based. You need facts or you aren’t taken seriously. It is biased, in favor of facts and evidence. So maybe the problem isn’t academia abandoning the right; maybe the problem is the right largely abandoning facts and evidence in favor of wild-eyed, emotional conspiracy theories.

Profoundly shocked by the news of Efeso Collins' passing. I first met Efeso as a 12 year old when he was a star in my mum's senior English class at Tangaroa College, and I looked forward to seeing his leadership develop. Incredibly sad for his family and the communities he cared for.
