Revenge in the Name of Honour, 2020 (tinyurl.com/4nyu4uab) from Helion is about the impact of the shocking losses of 1812 upon the British Royal Navy and upon the wider British world, from high-seas action to battles in the press.
Nicholas James Kaizer - Revenge in the Name of Honour
2020: Revenge in the Name of Honour is a well-researched and detailed account of the naval actions of the War of 1812. It is also a balanced look at the subject, examining the story from both sides of...

Me teaching high school politics in Canada for the FIRST time ever this semester: “kids I have no idea what the f**k is going on either.”
Strange to remember studying politics in the 90s- was axiomatic that a defining characteristic of the US right was adherence to the constitution & reverence for its restrictions on executive action. It was all ‘eternal vigilance is the price of liberty’ ‘don’t tread on me’
Then they all just flipped

Yeah when they wrote the Declaration they were equally appalled that the British let the Canadiens keep being Catholics and restricted the Americans’ ability to settle in “Indian” territory.
Tariffs are taxation without representation. We wrote a whole Declaration of Independence about it. Threw tea in the harbor and everything.

King Charles will be opening Canada's parliament later this month — the first time the English monarch has done so in 50 years. He'll be delivering PM Carney's first speech from the throne.

It's a clear bit of symbolism as Canada tries to re-orient back towards Europe and way from America.

Later this month, Canada will have the privilege of welcoming Their Majesties The King and Queen to Canada — where His Majesty King Charles III will deliver Canada’s speech from the throne.

This historic honour matches the weight of our times.

It is so important now for the Commonwealth Realms to stand together against Trump’s America.

We are united by history, values, and the Crown.

Enough of Labour’s cozying up to Trump.

Obviously our system is quite different and we have much (much) shorter elections, but Carney pulling the Liberal Party of Canada from a 2011-style wipeout into almost winning a majority in less than two months suggests that it is in fact reasonable to expect a hypothetical American presidential 1/2

The real story coming out of Canada’s consequential 2025 general election.
Mark Carney will surpass the prime ministerial tenure of Liz Truss on Saturday.

Trump isn't an ideologue. He doesn't give a crap who governs Canada. He just wants whoever governs Canada to suck up to him, and he got mad that Poilievre said mean things about him.

The great irony is that a Conservative government would probably be better for Trump than a Liberal one.
Donald Trump is doing everything he can to ensure the Conservative Party will lose today’s election in Canada.

The results being that overworked public servants need to work harder to make sure that this ballot can be delivered for voters.

Meanwhile, they’re protesting in a riding where the incumbent has no desire whatsoever to change the voting system. Who exactly is this for?

CANADIAN POLITICS IS WEIRD.
"Lead us Big Daddy" a Liberal yells out.
Liberals are passionate. #cdnpoli

Not threatening NATO allies would also help the US in future wars, too.

It’s a lovely evening sitting here in Canada, with a functioning democracy, allies around the globe, and tariff tree Port.

Americans: you sure you’re okay?

Pierre is on the ballot only in Carlton technically.

Let’s not needlessly presidentalize our system. Get out their and vote for your LOCAL Liberal candidate (or New Democrat in a handful of ridings where its a CPC/NDP battle).
If we are voting based on understanding the economy, enhancing Canada on a world stage, defending our sovereignty and improving Canadians lives how is Pierre even on the ballot????

MC for PM....
March 31, 2025 at 12:03 AM
Just a caveat to say: remember that there are a decent number of ridings where the NDP are well ahead of the liberals and are the better alternative for strategic voting.

There are also a number of urban ridings where the Conservatives are well beyond both (Halifax is one where you can vote NDP)
For one election put your NDP vote on hold and vote Liberal. If it splits and CONs win we will be sold to America.

And you will be the 51st state that has to worry about your kids in school or how you will pay for medical. Also min wage would drop down to $7 like its the fucking 90s!!

Teaching Canadian politics during these times is… interesting. I am my students are learning more and more that this reality of a hostile United States is CRAZY, but perhaps in tune with the broad span of Canadian history.

We were founded as an anti-American British dominion, damn it!

Weirdly, the War of 1812 is now a contemporarily relevant topic... so why not grab a copy of Revenge in the Name of Honour, all about how the British and colonial-Canadians experienced the war at sea. It's a Canadian topic, by a Canadian author. www.indigo.ca/en-ca/reveng...

My thanks to His Majesty King Charles III for his warm welcome and gracious hospitality today. Canada is fortunate to have a steadfast defender in our sovereign.

Too many Canadians (and Americans) have forgotten this. We were founded EXPRESSLY as an anti-American British state. English Canadians and French Canadians alike, going back to Gen. Arnold’s catastrophic invasion of Quebec, have rejected the American experiment and way of life.
Such a big chunk of Canadian history approx 1775 to 1900 in many ways about *not* being the USA
March 15, 2025 at 1:24 AM
So… I really didn’t expect that being a Canadian War of 1812 historian would even be politically relevant.

To quote the [new] Prime Minister: “it’s crazy.”
March 15, 2025 at 1:20 AM
Christ. From a Canadian perspective, it’s really hard to feel hope when the only alternative party down south that can contest their elections is to utterly useless.

They aren’t acting like this is existential. AOC gets it. Far too many of her colleagues do not.
Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.

So like… are Americans are just fine with Trump stating daily he wants to annex Canada?

I’ve run into TONS of well meaning Americans who are shocked to find that I, a Canadian, don’t find this silly or amusing.

Them’s fighting words.
Trump: "To be honest with you, Canada only works as a state. We don't need anything they have. As a state it would be one of the great states. This would be the most incredible country visually. If you look at a map, they drew an artificial line right through it."
March 13, 2025 at 6:27 PM
Sure would be easier for the US Navy to manage its globe-spanning commitments and maintain its grip on sea power if the US President wasn’t threatening allies.
