Statement from the organizers of the Longest Ballot Committee

When MPs are in charge of election rules the inevitable result is self-serving legislation.
Tucked away in bill C-4 (federal) is a clause which explicitly exempts political parties from all privacy laws🙄....a measure I really doubt any voter would support.

Yo anyone seen any long ballots recently

How time flies🕤 Just 6 months ago Pierre Poilievre called us a "scam" and outlined his original ideas for immediate electoral reform (of the anti-long ballot sort) in a letter to the government.

Happy New Year 🎉
What a rollercoaster of a year.
Huge thank you to all the candidates and supporters who made 2025's longest ballot campaigns possible❤️❤️❤️
It's been incredible watching what a ragtag group of amateurs can pull off✊
Looking forward to 2026 😀

The lesson is clear. When election rules are in the hands of PMs/Premiers, expect broken promises, empty gestures, and self-serving electoral law.

This arrangement serves whoever's in charge, not voters. ...And the best way we've found to annoy whoever's in charge is to join the longest ballot❤️

“[Bill 14] would bar new parties from using words or phrases already associated with registered parties or their predecessors… terms such as "advantage," "communist," "conservative," "democratic," "green," "liberal," "pro-life," "reform,"… Amery said the restrictions aim to prevent voter confusion”🙄

Bill 14: The first ever anti-long ballot legislation, courtesy of Danielle Smith's (rather embattled) UCP.
If passed, Alberta voters would be prohibited from nominating more than 1 candidate each, and candidates will need to collect 100 nomination signatures (up from the current 25).

"Electoral reform would be tantamount to enacting political antitrust legislation."

Exactly. Politicians shouldn't be allowed to set the rules by which politicians are elected. This is the job of an independent, non-partisan body in the form of a Citizens' Assembly.

If there were awards for systemic flaws in our political system I think Premiers & PMs being able to unilaterally decide what electoral reform will look like or in this case whether it happens at all would win top prizes in the #conflictofinterest and #democraticdeficit categories.
