THX to the deaf research faculty that were brave enough to stand up & share their struggles & triumphs in academia at ##TISLR15. They were honest & unapologetic in explaining the inequities they face in academia & by interpreters. Wish there could be an entire Symposium dedicated to this topic.

While many of us have embraced Bluesky, it seems accessibility issues have been overlooked. Anyone know if @bsky.app are working on addressing this?
Still no auto captions for videos? You do need to think about accessibility.

Optimist: the cup is half full
Pessimist: the cup is half empty
Sign linguist: notes that Auslan, BSL, and ASL all have lexical signs that can tell you if the signer views the cup as half ‘full’ or ‘empty’ but that signers can also use depicting signs to show how much liquid actually is in the cup.
Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Linguist: quantities are described with regard to a reference state; thus we can efficiently convey whether the cup was more recently full or empty

Many good principles laid out here, but #7, deaf leadership in sign language AI projects, is really the most critical. In the USA, there are now many qualified deaf researchers to lead this work. If it’s too hard to find European counterparts, then folks need to prioritize capacity building.
Tomorrow at Ghent University, symposium about Language and Inclusion. I'll be presenting the new paper with EUD about co-creation, and the inconvenient truths of inclusive sign language technology development. arxiv.org/pdf/2408.13171

Stop assuming Deaf people can’t do anything because of “communication barriers” because like… ??? Deaf people have always been able to find multiple ways to communicate. You just don’t wanna do anything other than speak.. the barrier is YOU in those situations.
