My son delivered me a smothered check mate, a forced combination after I thought I had a winning attack. In a swoop, he sacrificed a rook, and I almost fell off my chair when I saw it

I started play chess because it was a way to spend time with my grandfather. Today I lost in 9 moves to a player ranked lower than me, and my ranking on chess.com is already low. I have to remind myself why I started playing because that makes me want to give up. I’m just terrible at this game.

Tennis competition in Thursdays is equally about the game as it is about the after game spread. My teammate treated us to a wine from his collection, lifting the standard from here on I hope! 😂😂

Tonight I had the realisation that I would never beat my son again in chess. I told him so, and felt a surge of pride and affection for him. I remember when I beat my own dad at tennis, and realised I would never lose to him again. He was confused and furious. Still love him though.

A former student dropped by at work today as part of an alumni thing and told me he has a part in Henry V because his French was so good! He joked he was going to credit me. Told him it was the LEAST he could do 😂😂😂

Athletics day today. I was manning the javelin. Next to me, high jump. Y10 boy jumps, missed the mattress and dislocated his shoulder. lot of pain. I went to him, ‘Seb, you ok?!!!!!?’
‘Sir, argh aaaaahrgh. You had a hair cut this weekend’
I kid you not. Through the pain, that’s what he told me.

Back in the dark side there is a conversation around content knowledge and general teaching practice, affirming that general teaching practice is inferior to content knowledge in secondary schools. I think the message is that teachers are the specialists of their subjects, which is true, but

Couple of interesting things about Stoker’s Dracula. A page about Dracula’s thoughts on the importance of learning a foreign language and aiming to a level of command of English language that would get ppl to not see him as a foreigner. I know that feeling only too well!

Love watching chess vids. noticed that players drink from water bottle when they just just played a strong move triggering an end game or mate in a few moves. Next time I play against my work place coach I’ll try to put him off his game by drinking when I play a blunder 😂 I’ll be totally hydrated.
