Simple thing we can do in UK to tell the Big Orange to FO: don’t buy US wine. Wine from USA is the largest Agricultural export to UK, 15% of total. With roughly 25million UK wine drinkers, that’s ~ $10 each a year, so not much each. Tonight I’m on a nice Bordeaux instead. Small change, big impact.

Got to love a buggy, but not the 6v lights! I just checked and TGP46 shows as last taxed in 1978!

Clearly Austin were a much underrated manufacturer and actually ahead of the game - my Dad’s old Austin Montego did have a tendency to veer to the right of its own accord 🤷‍♂️

“EV’s are no good because the public charging just isn’t good enough, you can’t charge them if you don’t have a drive”… Sigh… 🙄
November 27, 2024 at 10:07 PM
Of course they’re no good - that’s why I didn’t go to south of France in mine this summer. Oh, wait… 🤦‍♂️

Reminds me of Death continually challenging & losing to Bill & Ted at Twister / Battleships / etc…

And finally, I’ve got this to finish - my other Bug that I have owned for 38yrs, now converting to EV with a 215hp Nissan Leaf motor/inverter hanging off the Porsche gearbox. Still a lot to do on it but hopefully next year will see some good progress.

Anyway, hope I’ve not bored you all! (13/13)

As for work, well as an experienced ICE engineer, who has also done the relevant high-voltage training to do EV stuff, I spent the summer messing about on the Solent doing development work on an RIB running a hybrid Methanol fuelled V8 and a 250hp Electric motor with 63kWh battery pack (12/13)

Of course the first thing we did in the new one was a road trip, down through France to the Ardeche. With 25k on the first ID3 and 30k on the e208, we had still not tried a continental trip, so I was nervous, but it was so easy and un-stressful - absolutely no issues over range anxiety. (11/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
In the 18months I’ve had the ID3 I’ve racked up 25k miles, & absolutely love it. The HUD is superb, the matrix headlights are brilliant. Then my Wife decided she wanted a bigger car than the e208, so a hunt turfed up another ID3 - a 1yr old long-range one this time. So now we have 2x ID3 (10/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
Eventually, after 17months (!) the ID3 turned up. Finally! But since the e208 was so good we decided to keep it and instead get rid of my Wife’s mk7 Golf. So now we were a 2x EV family! Oh, plus the Green Bug, and a CamperVan, and another project bug in the garage. (9/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
The e208 was excellent, taking me all over the country. Stellantis do get some grief about warranty problems, & I did have some issues, but all sorted very quickly & with no fuss by our local Peugeot dealer. Got a max of 205miles from it, and a worst of 150 when it was -5°c & heavy snow. (8/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
Of course things went awry again when VW got in a huge production mess, and the delivery date went back. In need of a better car to do my new commute, I looked around and spied a 2yr old / 9k miles Peugeot e208 on Autotrader. It’s on the eCMP platform I had done the shaker rig for of course. (7/13)

A year later, in late ‘21, I was back & ready to order an ID3 again, but this time, since they were now launched, I first hired one for a week to check it would suit us. Did nearly 1000miles in that week, went everywhere - It was even better than I expected. Ordered one the day I returned it (6/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
I’d never bought a new car before, so I was excited to expect it mid-2020, just in time for my 50th birthday. Of course the zombie apocalypse happened… Eventually I was asked to confirm my order in autumn 2020, just as I was made redundant. So back to my 48yr old Bug as a daily driver (5/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
I then decided this was something I wanted to be a part of, started following that Kryten chap on Fully Charged, watched his test drive of the prototype camouflaged ID3, and being a VW fanboy I put a deposit down on day1 of the pre-launch of the VW ID3. (4/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
After the JCB project concluded, I then did my first EV work - I was part of the team doing a shaker test rig to validate the battery pack for the PSA eCMP platform battery pack. Basically mounted down onto a powerful rig and shake it in XYZ at various complex frequencies to see if it broke. (3/13)
November 18, 2024 at 10:49 PM
I’ve run engines on all sorts of fuels - H2, LPG, CNG, Landfill Gas, Gasoline, AvGas, Methanol, Diesel, HFO, in 2 & 4-stroke, & super high efficiency split-cycle engines.

I was also involved in setting a world speed record for a tractor, with JCB & Guy Martin, & even made it on to TV on C4 (2/13)

So as I’m likely to be more active on here regarding EVs I thought I’d share a bit of my background and EV story.

I’ve been a Powertrain design & development Engineer for several decades, having worked on all sizes & types of ICE, from small passenger car up to huge marine engines (1/13)

Can thoroughly recommend the Peugeot e-208. We had one for 2yrs - a 2020 car with 9k miles in ‘22 and sold 2 yrs later on 40k. A great fun car, ideal for a local commute / runaround, but also fine for long treks. We only sold it because of growing teenagers so needing something bigger.

Snap! 🤣 Also bought in Portsmouth as well. Agree it’s gutless, but it’s still fun and perfect for a Teen to learn in

Ooh.. can I join? Am an automotive engineer, done EV development work, have 2xEV and converting an old VW to Leaf-power. Happily waded in on TwiX to promote EV and fight the FUD

Won’t be using my old account but won’t delete it because my pinned post is a photo of my Tory MP breaking lockdown law by not wearing a mask in a shop. It irritates him greatly.
