No Spanish leader of whatever political stripe is ever going to sign up to 5% spending on defence. It’s just politically impossible to do.

There is still a cringe, though. Look how Spanish newspapers cover what UK newspapers say about Spain - especially the critical stuff.

It is. That's why I urge people to vote Labour where its candidate is best placed to beat the right. But welfare reform is needed and was botched. Immigration rhetoric has been hugely damaging. And Labour is playing into Farage's hands. Pretending all is well when it clearly isn't helps no-one.

It's all good. But let's not pretend there hasn't been some terrible, self-harming stuff too - most notably on immigration and botched welfare reform - while the failure to understand, let alone confront, the existential threat to the UK the right now poses is nothing short of disastrous.

I suspect the pushback will only come once all is lost.

And it will come in the form of handwringing and regret from those in power who did nothing to stop all this.

They'll do as little as they can get away with, sadly.
