“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
@snellarthur.bsky.social thank you for this episode with Mike Martin, which though terrifying is surprisingly optimistic (not sure what that says about my starting point).

Everyone else: if you haven’t found this podcast this is a good episode to start with.

Now I need to think of easy snacks for a horde of teenagers coming to play RPG on the weekend. Guacamole and corn chips? What else? Fried halloumi bites? Cheesy muffins? Chilli cornbread?

No one would do this. Nor would they volunteer to do neurosurgery or defuse explosives. And yet this is what many communities like voting for: institutionalised lack of expertise. It always ends the same way: it’s just that you can’t always see the crashed plane.

Evergreen.
I've mentioned before, but I think about this a lot:

"There must be another room, somewhere down the hall, where the real meeting is happening, where the real experts are, making the real decisions ... because it can’t just be us. It can’t just be this." -- Jake Sullivan, 2013

And they’re going to turn it into an “everytown for gun safety” website.

This might be the most brilliant troll job in history.
The Onion bought Infowars at auction?!

I don't know who decided that St Brice's Day should be #WorldKindnessDay, but I'm guessing it wasn't Æthelred the Unready.

This. I’ve also skipped a lot of colds which I do not miss.
If I'm wrong about any of this, then I’ve spent a few years getting used to wearing a tight fitted respirator every time I left my home.
Thing is, if you're wrong, you have wrecked your body and possibly yours and your kids’ lives.

I love this analysis.
In 1942, at the height of the Second World War, Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed sweethearts bidding each other farewell before the men depart for war, not knowing if they'd ever return. These candid shots give us a glimpse of what average Americans wore.

Let's look at the details. 🧵

A lot of you are reading this as some kind of "good vibes only" toxic positivity bullshit when that is in no way shape or form what i said.

It is not REQUIRED that things "get worse before they get better." So stop accelerating the worse. Push harder to build the better.

How did I miss that American “root beer” is the disgusting thing I call sarsaparilla? All these years I assumed it was a nice ginger beer, how lovely. It should be that. Sarsaparilla is like mouthwash. Please do try ginger beer instead. How did I live in NY for 4 years and not learn this?

I love the concept of #GirlDinner even though I love to cook for the whole family, so they become “lunch”. Also, I add bacon. And possibly fetta.
