It's wild. I had weird incidents in Lethbridge through the years, but nothing like this. It is a drastically different world.

I am right downtown, though, so I would hope it's not quite this bad everywhere.

During the lockout, the university essentially abandoned students, demonstrating an unwillingness to communicate or even be honest.

So, when we sought supports and make the institution aware of the needs, we were met with resistance and discouragement. Not solutions.

We found our own solutions.

Financal issues have when combined with the pressure of school and the requirement to succeed. Especially for later year undergrad and grad students.

For many, it's the first time they've been in that situation, so it's as much about inexperience as it is about the devastation and personal failure.

Fourth, aid often comes with very specific requirements students aren't used to qualifying for, so many disregard it as an option. Some of the steps outlined in the article would address this.

So, to push that mindset means students are less likely to reach out under any circumstances.

Third, the uni makes it clear they are uninterested in helping financially above the bare minimum, so for many, the shame and fight just wouldn't be worth it to seek aid.

Second, as a student, the university culture is very much a "figure it out yourself" situation.

I've personally had a university tell me the obstacles I faced sounded "like a you" problem.

It was the faculty & student Union as a support system. (Depending who that is.)

See it as a potential solution and place to go for help.

Never mind that the school is how you got into that situation in the first place.

In times of upheaval, this divide just gets bigger. Not smaller.

I disliked Ralph Kline with a special passion, but even for him, there were firm lines he wasn't willing to (or that Albertans wouldn't allow him to) cross.
