A US Navy destroyer is a weapons platform for anti-state operations. It carries things like Tomahawk missiles, which are about 18 feet long and 3,000 pounds. Destroyers—and carrier groups—are not the sort of military hardware one uses against nonstate actors like narcotics trafficking organizations.

Already during the GWOT there were serious concerns about sharing intel and prisoners with the US, but this is a whole new level. As a reservist during that time I actually wrote some letters to politicians to highlight this, but got only mealy-mouthed non-answers back.
I wrote on the UK's reported suspension of some intel sharing with the US on legal grounds. I spoke to several former intel officials & all agreed that they could not think of a comparable case over decades. Some expressed serious concern over retaliation www.economist.com/britain/2025...
