I don’t think Cascadia will suddenly succeed into a sovereign nation, but I do think that steps like this are good, and that one of the best case scenarios is a gradual weakening of centralized federal power, and rise of regional power.

At the Mo Kings marvh on 5th Ave, downtown Seattle! Went with friends for whom it’s their first protest ever. Hard to say how many people are here. Many thousands just around me. Wouldn’t be surprised to hear there are over 100k people here.

Apparently the International Court of Justice is “intellectually unserious” but maybe they should apologize to @preetbharara.bsky.social’s guest for accusing Israel of genocide so offensively. He seems to find the infant corpses left to decompose in the NICU fine.

All the "this is just a distraction" posts are just failures to look at the whole picture.
Why'd Trump take over DC? Not as a "distraction."

@radleybalko.bsky.social: "He is testing the limits of his power — and, by extension, of our democracy. He’s feeling out what the Supreme Court, Congress, and the public will let him get away with. And so far, he’s been able to do what he pleases."

A couple reflections on this from the next day. Behind the line of Mayday security were a few women and teens throwing their arms up & praying. I don’t believe they would have been in danger even without SPD or security. Their gear would have been trashed though.
Maybe the most tense part of the evening, the few remaining mayday rally goers are backed into a corner while the remaining protesters surround them shouting “Go home fasciste!” SPD just looks on.

So of course, I’m headed down to City Hall to see what’s up. I have no preparation or protective gear or even a crudely written cardboard sign. I will stay mostly on the edges and record.
KUOW says the hate group has another rally at city hall today at 5. This may be a slightly less provocative than on Capitol Hill. I still expect SPD to be ready to inflict violence on counterprotestors anyhow.

It’s insane that the mayor is more likely to face repercussions from this debacle than anyone in SPD. Mayor Harrell is an idiot but it’s the SPD who initiated violence in defense of a far right hate group with certainty of impunity.

Again, trapped at work when I’d rather be marching. Luckily the march came to me. Hard to see numbers where I am but looks like a couple thousand people. Police escorts, plus bicycle & motorcycle corkers. Beautiful day for a protest.

A protest march (that I saw in the distance while I was working) on one bridge; SPD plotting police brutality on another.

Attended an anti-ICE, immigrant support rally at the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center today. Wasn’t sure what to expect so I didn’t bring my phone. Turned out to be chill (except one guy).

It’s been obvious for decades that Democrats try and perennially fail to court voters who hate them. This represents mainstream Dem thinking. My real takeaway is that the Democrat party will not save us. They don’t even understand what the problem is.
New: Last month, a group of moderate Democratic consultants, campaign staffers, elected officials & party leaders gathered in Loudoun County, Virginia, for a retreat where they plotted their party’s comeback.

We got their takeaways. t.co/bEwlg4jbtM

Not if the Democrats don’t get extremely serious about creating meaningful resistance. Because right now their most visible message is complaining that their constituents want them to try literally anything.
So 2027-28 is gonna be just wall to wall congressional hearings huh

I believe the GoPro guy was "Volunteer visual reporter Nate Ashby."

This is their claim today. "... isn’t here to push a conservative or liberal agenda—our newsroom includes a range of perspectives, and we strive to cover the full spectrum of news. Yes, we once focused more on conservative topics, but limiting coverage to one side isn’t real journalism"

The man with the mounted GoPro appears at 0:09 of this video. It wouldn't surprise me if the first guy I saw was the named person who provided (and presumably filmed) this footage. The YouTube account & website is a right-leaning group.

I listened to about 45 minutes of Rep Rick Larsen‘s (D-Boeing) phone town hall yesterday. He seemed in no way alarmed or especially concerned about anything going on. He recommended we “call the White House” to voice complaints.

In #Bellingham for the continued #50501 protest in front of the federal building. Pretty good turnout. Maybe 300 people on the sidewalks. Lots of supportive (I think) honks from cars.
February 17, 2025 at 8:08 PM
All in all, the protest today was fine, but meager. Nothing compared to the Women’s March after Trump’s first inauguration. People seem very angry online but it remains to be seen if that becomes tangible, effective actions.
At the #WA capitol in #Olympia for #5051 #protest. Fair turnout for short notice. About 2,000 people on the capitol steps. Nearly all normal folks with homemade signs. Wide age range. Maybe 20 state cops in small groups. A handful of kids in bloc. Pretty good for short notice.
