I know there's a lot going on right now, but can we talk about Sega for a second?
Give me that Jonny Grubb look!

Mildly heartbreaking thrift store find of the day: this very much appears to be framed little kid art.

Like, why did they frame it like this?

Ok, so nobody was gonna tell me that Temba Wide-Arm has been a Star Trek reference this whole time???

This is so fucking funny to me

One thing I'm finding is that the emulation community has an unwavering commitment to tech preservation that can sometimes go a bit too far.

Behold: The English patch for a Japan-exclusive McDonald's training program for the Nintendo DS.

I keep forgetting to take a pic of the dog. Sorry, gang!

Nobody on Earth does comedy like @bransonreese.bsky.social
This is not the punchline of the comic, it's not even strictly a joke. But it cracked me up, and I will not be done thinking about it for a long time.

Damn. Chill out, Goldark.

And then… there is the weird stuff. PC ports like LINDA^3 have turned out to be a kind of missing link that makes an entire generation of modern indie RPGMaker games with surprisingly dark and intricate themes suddenly snap into place.

TOMB RAIDER was a Sega Saturn exclusive first. Bet you didn’t know that! Or maybe you did. You’re really smart.
But nobody knew what 3D action games were supposed to be. And somebody at Sega went “Try it here!” and it worked! And then the Saturn failed and they said “Ok try it on PlayStation then.”

LUNAR: THE SILVER STAR is not obscure to most people, but that’s only because it escaped Sega CD containment to land on the Sega Saturn and escaped THAT to land as a port the PlayStation not once, not twice, but thrice.
Look at what happens when failure is just part of the business model.

I am not even kidding when I say that my whole life would have been different if I had played PANZER DRAGOON SAGA when it came out. Like most dorks my age, FF7 wrote the template for what an RPG even was in the 90s, but the alternative template laid out here is WAY more brain-expanding and exciting.

“Hey what if I could boot up and play a friggin’ Saturday morning cartoon?”
Hey what if you SHUT UP and listen to your superior officer—whose name is BIG LANDMAN—as he teaches you how to be an implausibly exciting futuristic anime fire fighter in BURNING RANGERS.

I should be asleep, but get a load of SNATCHER! Hideo Kojima’s shameless Blade Runner fanfic that somebody just let him go ahead and make, and maybe paved the way for modern gaming storytelling as we know it.
October 22, 2024 at 6:15 AM
Hey did anybody ever get to the bottom of what the hell is supposed to be going on here??
October 12, 2024 at 1:00 AM
I've been going deep into the Sega Saturn library, and it rules because it's taking me back to an era when video games exploded in a million different directions and nobody really had any idea of what a video game was even supposed to be yet.

PSA: YES, you CAN turn it off. TBD whether it actually works.
