The colors on these Aspergillus were just so beautiful. The green one is Aspergillus flavus, and the tan one is Aspergillus terreus.

The exudate on the A. terreus literally made it ✨️sparkle✨️.

Fungus is so amazing ❤️

"Continued progress for human health is not natural. It will result or fail to result from human choices."

All of these colonies are the same genus! They are all Pseudomonas! Pseudomonas can appear mucoid, dry/wrinkly, metallic, or regular depending on the isolate. There are even 2 oxidase negative species! Do you know which ones they are?

Saw this colorful guy pop up on a B. cepacia selective agar (BCSA) plate from a CF patient. The way it changed the color of the agar was so cool!

What fungi do you think it is?

On this day in 1981, a landmark paper in NEJM described four patients with evidence of immunodeficiency associated with PJP pneumonia, disseminated CMV, and Kaposi sarcoma. The disease would come to be known as HIV/AIDS. Revisit the paper: nej.md/41iekKD

This impressive guy grew out of a sputum! He looks and sounds menacing, turning the agar black and named Streptomyces badius. But he's likely harmless in this patient. A lit review showed it also protects strawberry plants and their bees from pathogens! 🍓🐝
