I'm a little old lady who keeps her mind sharp by using the internet to destroy the oligarchy and the patriarchy when not gardening.

The gardens are all tucked in for the winter. The dye garden in the photo will be enlarged in '26 as I'll have more time available. If my hubris causes the goddesses to smit me with more opportunities to earn money from teaching dyeing in '26 than in'25, I'll submit.

#showmeyourknits Celebrating INDIE Designer & Dyers this week. I'll pick one: Jenise Hope, who's Elephant Cowl design I modified for this vest with vintage commercial Shetland yarn. I also love her afghan designs.
My own dyeing, using only natural dyes, developed into my teaching business.

I'm rich! A friend has given me almost 4 pounds of beautiful wool for spinning. My spinning isn't equal to this quality, so I'm bartering with friend #2 who'll spin it and keep some in return. I'll dye mine with natural materials. And I'll knit a sweater for friend #1 with a different type of wool.

#showmeyourknits Week 68, FLOOF. Head band used a 25 gram skein of Still River Mill 50% quviut, 35% suri alpaca, 15% silk. Pattern: Elisa McLaughlin's Bohemian Cinch Head Wrap. One friend gave me a wealth of different rovings. I'll barter with a spinning friend and knit a sweater for first friend.

First snow of the season--wet, lasted 10 minutes, now changed to rain--here in central Maine, USA. We are 95% prepared for winter.

#showmeyourknits Week 67. What's on the needles? 4 things almost done: 2 scrappy baby blankets. Husband's sweater needs the neckline finished, grosgrain ribbon and buttons. The weather is getting colder, so this is priority #1. And the endless skinny scarf of handspun alpaca dyed with goldenrod.

Some of the dye plant materials from my garden and foraged here and there. I'll have enough color in my life this winter.

#showmeyourknits Week 66, cables. Afghan squares I knit in 2017 with naturally dyed wool yarn before crocheting them together. The finished piece is 50" square and hard to fit in one photo. The pattern is Norah's Vintage Afghan by Norah Gaughan. I used 16 of her 20 squares--don't like bobbles. 😝

I peeked out of the shadows for an announcement that I joined the board of directors of the Maine Fibershed. I don't raise sheep anymore, but raise, forage, & use dye plants, plus knit, weave, teach, & write on the subject. Supporting fiber farmers (all farmers!) & healthy farmland is important.

#showmeyourknits This week it's horror stories--or dang-I-knit-it-loved-it-then-lost-it stories. I found this easy mitten kit by Friendz Blendz (70% wool, 30% mohair) at Bessie's Farm Goods in Freeport, Maine, when I ran out of knitting projects while visiting family. Fuzzy, fun...LOST 😢

Yesterday was Open House at Tear Cap Workshops in Hiram, Maine (100 miles from home). I am one of the occasional instructors--natural dyeing is my thing. My husband did some work on his next traditional Greenland kayak to give potential students a preview of next spring's class. A delightful day.

#showmeyourknits Hats off for week 64! A few favorites--

During last week's Open Studio, a visitor offered me some black walnuts & delivered a couple of big buckets full the next day. What riches! Today there's wool yarn in the dyepot with the chocolatey liquid from the husks. It will be even darker when it's done. I'll use the nuts for banana bread.

#showmeyourknits SPOOKY! Here's a happy little bat using Anna Hrachovec's pattern BOO the Bat. And a bonus Praying Mantis; pattern by Hansi Singh. Both were knit with wool yarn scraps.

These two wonderful people on the REAL MAINE Fiber Tour & Trail stopped at my place to dye silk scarves with onion skins, see my studio & dye garden, talk plants, and share fiber adventures. Delightful! I'm looking forward to visits from more fiber folks--REAL MAINE!
