I don’t play (or make) TTRPGs but still love watching @jpcoovert.bsky.social‘s videos, like this one about making zines.

I’d recommend them to anyone who wants to make stuff, because even when there’s not an obvious overlap with what you’re making, it’s impossible not to be inspired to Just Do It.

I'm pondering the steps of TTRPG combat. I know that they came from wargaming but it seems like the complexity was built in to supplement the rolling that was lost in mass combat. It seems to be a legacy trait from another time. So what can we change?

Never underestimate the usefulness of a mental map! I was stuck on the "skills" section for my game so I started with the core aspect of my game and branched out based on what I thought characters would do. In the end it allowed me to narrow it down to a list of 20 base skills.

Which character description sounds more appealing: Dwarven cleric or undefeated duelist? Human barbarian or Double-jointed Acrobat? Elven warlock or Inquisitive street urchin?

How can we better use this in TTRPG design? 🤔

In #ttrpgs do you enjoy more descriptive injuries over HP as long as it doesn't significantly contribute to a death spiral? (Death Spiral is when an injury causes your character to be worse in combat, which causes them to take more damage, thus continuing the downward spiral.)

One of the major things missing in TTRPGs is "methods of attack" for NPCs. Currently, monsters and PCs line up facing each other and trade blows until HP is eliminated. (Like old-school Final Fantasy.) Stat blocks tell you WHAT they attack with but not how they engage in combat itself.

Character Attributes

What are attributes and what purpose to they serve in TTRPGs? Essentially, attributes are a way to describe characters using both qualifiable and quantifiable methods.

What do I mean by that?

When designing TTRPGs how many people look at dice probability to determine rolling mechanisms? I know some games, like the d20 system, have equal probability because a majority of their rolls are with a single die. Others seek out a bell-curve such as in Powered by the Apocalypse.

TTRPG Design Ideas: D&D introduced "tools" to do specific tasks like picking locks. When you think about it EVERY object that you use to complete a task is a tool, even weapons ....

More TTRPG design ideas: what if weapons weren't there to deal an arbitrary number in damage to an arbitrary number of health? What if they were a means to an end? What if they were just tools used to be more successful at a skill check? (In this case Combat)

Working on TTRPG design and so many games are based on combat. Probably because the original games were based on tabletop wargames.

But for roleplaying purposes, why do we fight?

This thought took me down a rabbit hole of thought and it basically comes down to two answers:

Autistic Scripting fail for the day: I stepped off of the sidewalk to allow someone the right of way (I was wearing boots, they weren't, and it was muddy.)

I expected them to say "Thank You". Instead they said "How's it going."

My reply was "No problem." 🤦‍♂️

I'm reviewing character leveling alternatives beyond XP and milestone advancement. While I like the idea of character advancement based on completing plot-based achievements I also like the idea of advancing by fulfilling your class role. Thoughts?

When rolling character backgrounds in #Shadowdark do you prefer to have a broad range of mundane professions OR interesting plot hooks?
