if I understand American politics correctly, progressivism is something that requires 60 senate votes to work, while national conservatism doesn’t require any votes at all

Reminder: Sure, the student protestors turned out to be right about Vietnam, and gay rights, and apartheid, and the Latin American dirty wars, and the invasion of Iraq -- but *this time* they are cluelessly naive and only protesting to look cool to their friends.

Our culture has real trouble grasping that we can't bring back what it felt like to see The Prisoner/Ghostbusters/Star Wars the first time by doing them again, because the thing that made them compelling is that they were different. We can only feel that feeling again by making more new things.

Maybe eight or nine years ago I would have felt absolutely convinced that nobody could ignore the suffering this poor kid endured, that things would have to change. That hope doesn’t exist in my heart anymore.
