“Good economics” means preventing public finance that could rapidly solve social deprivation and the ecological crisis.

Neoclassical economics is a discipline that is designed to serve the interests of the capitalist class, and they are more or less honest about this fact.

Carney: The system of global trade anchored on the United States.. is over. Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80 year period when the United States embraced the mantle of economic leadership… is over.

I'm at a meeting at my public library. It is a community garden orientation, and plots are very cheap. Volunteer hours are used for maintenance and growing food for soup kitchens and the community. The org is supported by a local non profit.

This is one of many things public libraries do. Fund them

NEW: in another late-night “fork” email to federal employees, OPM has apparently made what is their “last, best, and final” offer to convince our members to resign their employment.

Folks, we didn’t think this was possible, but OPM found a way to make the offer *worse.* 🧵

Late last night, with about 15 minutes notice to the Union, the NLRB’s HR sent an email adopting the terms of the forked-up resignation scam. HR also provided us a contract that appears to be drafted by AI or LegalZoom. As labor lawyers, we’re happy to go over this in detail. 🧵

Today I'm announcing a plan to unleash the public sector and build the housing we desperately need.

As Mayor, I will triple New York City's production of permanently affordable, union-built, rent-stabilized homes, constructing 200,000 new units over the next decade.

Appeasement never works! It never has! Almost every great accomplishment in our history is the result of confrontation! And “this is unprecedented,” is how we make history, not a demand to succumb to it.
What’s wild is that the Democratic strategy deployed at any other time of crisis in US history would have resulted in the end of the country. Colonists tried negotiating with Britain for years. Compromise of 1820 and again in 1850, and we still got a rebellion. Famously: FDR and Nazis.

"President Ronald Reagan fired 11,000 air traffic controllers who were on strike. The action was a major blow to the labor movement, resulting in the decertification of the union months later — and a shortage of air traffic controllers that extended into the George H.W. Bush administration."
Trump rescinded the DEI policies at the FAA through an executive order last week. The order falsely claimed that those programs penalized “hard-working Americans.” Critics say those programs actually made aviation safer.

Just to be clear, because the NYT doesn't spell this out in the article: This is clearly an effort to defund, and therefore destroy, our nation's public broadcasters. At a time when the information ecosystem is crumbling under the weight disinformation, this effort could not be more nefarious.

It's important to say that these Trump executive orders are unlawful and unconstitutional, but we also need to get beyond it.

It would be better to lead with our values and build from there.

Two parts:

1) Achievement isn't the same as learning, but if it was ...

2) This is a reminder that America is not doing everything possible to raise achievement. A robust and healthier society would create conditions for a better education.

But deficit-based narratives win the day.
