I remember when the Canadian border was so friendly, we'd cross by sailboat and call in by VHF and not even need to report in person. Canada was just a different accent on the news, a weatherman who sounded like a Norwegian who'd learned English from a Scott. How are they an adversary today?

Not impressed with promises to short-circuit the sort of detailed, painstaking NTSB investigation that has made US airspace the safest in the world for decades.

You don't go 20 years without a major collision based on next-day armchair opinions.

A reminder that there is no giant faucet connecting southern California to the Pacific Northwest. No aqueduct, no pipe, no channel or ditch. No valve to turn or pumps to switch on.

Trump Keeps Urging California to Turn on Its Giant ‘Faucet’
The president’s repeated talk of a spigot, which he calls a faucet or valve, has been puzzling Californians and Canadians for some time. “I don’t really understand what he’s saying.”

How long is this "temporary" pause in *all* federal grants?

How long do small towns have to wait for reimbursement of money they've already spent under existing approved grants?

This may be a Constitutional crisis at the federal level, but a very practical cash crisis for towns and counties.
All federal grants and loan disbursement paused by White House | CNN Politics
The White House budget office has ordered a pause on all federal grants and loans, according to an internal memorandum sent Monday.

If a person without legal immigration status is not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States, does that mean the U.S. has no legal basis to arrest, detain, or deport them?

It seems a risky strategy to claim we have no jurisdiction over them just to deny their children citizenship.

Hearing a section of the Interurban Trail in Auburn, WA has collapsed where it's been flooding all winter. It's been gradually deteriorating here for more than a year. Busy commuter route after dark, hope people are used to taking the flooded section carefully!

#WAleg wish-list: Residential street preservation cameras.

Problem: heavy trucks cut through residential streets.

Proposal: license plate reader cameras cite vehicles whose scale weight exceeds the posted weight limit of the street.

Cite the registered owner for allowing overweight operation.

Anyone know whether this law can be enforced by parking enforcement officers? Seems like an obvious choice, avoids all the risks and expenses of traffic stops.

If not currently allowed, seems like a reasonable WAleg proposal.

New fines coming in 2025 for WA license plate law
A Washington law has been on the books for some time, though unclear language had kept punishment at bay.

Washington: New: SB 5001, by Senators Jeff Wilson (R) and Manka Dhingra (D), will ditch Daylight Saving Time and restore permanent Standard Time by end of 2025. 👏 Tell WA state legislators to support SB 5001! #WALeg #DitchDST

What an amazing way to start December!

I suspect most of the people who push for permanent DST did not live in Washington State when Congress tried permanent DST before. It was miserable, and Congress reversed itself with unusual speed.
Washington State #WALeg Senator Jeff Wilson (R) is filing legislation to #DitchDST by permanent Standard Time; thank you! This is the quickest, safest, healthiest way to #DitchTheSwitch. Tell your state legislators to support!

RIP graceful weeping willow whose shady canopy was large enough to show up on aerial heat maps of the city, whose branches were a place for our kids to play and birds to nest. Last night's gusty east winds met branches still full of leaves, and roots weakened by months of winter flooding had enough.

Having learned from 7-figure settlements that bollards generally don't belong at street/trail intersections, King County is upping their game on visual cues that this isn't a motor vehicle facility.

How does your city or county handle these intersections?
