Believe it or not, you can still buy a new Simpson meter. The product line is about 90 years old. #electronics #engineeering

Q Magnetics at the Powerhouse Energy Campus #NMRchat #Chemsky
We’re proud to support local research efforts at the CSU Powerhouse Energy Campus, where the QM-125 NMR now provides everyday NMR accessibility to a research group. They will soon be using it for tracking electrochemical reactions, advancing their research within their own lab. #NMRchat #benchtopNMR

Did you know you can use 125 MHz benctop NMR to measure isotopic ratios? #NMRchat #NMR #ChemSky
Check out the ¹⁹F NMR spectrum of NaBF₄ at 3 T. Coupling of ¹⁹F to ¹¹B gives a quartet, while ¹⁰B yields a septet. The ¹¹B quartet dominates due to its higher natural abundance. The difference in multiplicity creates a beautiful example of ¹⁹F – ¹⁰/¹¹B coupling! #NMRchat #Chemistry #FluorineNMR

The proton triplet might fool you into thinking that the H-F ortho and meta J-couplings are equal. But nooooo
125 MHz 1,4-difluorobenzene proton and fluorine multiplets appear first-order with equal J-couplings, even though the protons are not magnetically equivalent. Observed splitting of 6.08 Hz in both multiplets is close to the average of these couplings.🧪 #NMRchat #chemistry #benchtopnmr

Catastrophe
I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

Stacked spectra of vanillin in benzene-d₆ and CDCl₃ reveal how solvent choice shapes chemical shifts. Benzene-d₆, with its strong anisotropic ring current, subtly shields aromatic protons and can spread the aromatic region compared to CDCl₃.

Another edible spectrum
At 125 MHz, benchtop NMR highlights methyl salicylate. Best known as wintergreen scent, it's used in flavorings, fragrances, and topical pain-relief products. Wintergreen plants produce methyl salicylate as a defense from pathogens and predators.🧪 #NMRchat #Chemistry #flowchemistry #benchtopnmr

We seem to be on an edible chemistry jag
At 125 MHz, benchtop NMR highlights the aromatic, methoxy, and aldehyde signals of vanillin. Widely recognized as the main component of vanilla-bean flavoring, it is also used in fragrances, cosmetics, and to improve the flavor of medications.

For some samples, benchtop NMR at 125 MHz is equivalent to high-field NMR.
This 125 MHz spectrum of tributyrin demonstrates the high dispersion and high resolution of Q Magnetics benchtop NMR. Tributyrin is used as a prodrug of butyric acid. It has applications in colorectal cancer therapy and gastrointestinal health.

Guv Jared Polis did an ask-me-anything on Reddit yesterday. It’s well worth reading. He remains strongly in support of vaccine access and is more critical of RFK Jr. than I expected. Unfortunately, no response about ICE building concentration camps in Colorado.

From a 1960 book chapter by James Schoolery. Back in the day it was CPS=cycles per second and mc=megacycles, and there was always carbon tet if you needed a ‘deuterated’ solvent
