A hard frost this morning with a temp of 24°. The herbaceous perennial layer has withered to brown sticks while the larch still hangs onto its yellow needles.

Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation

The Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) did not survive the most recent freeze. It was cold enough (and for a long enough duration) to freeze over the bird bath.

Still some decent fall foliage around the yard, especially in the shrub and herbaceous layer. Some notable trees that hang onto their leaves: Bigtooth Aspen, Chestnut Oak, Larch (tamarack)

It’s a beautiful day for a “fall cleanup”

I don’t remove a single leaf from the property. All get distributed in the beds, used as insulation in my nursery, and remnant scraps are mulched into the remaining lawn, a last resort, as I try to keep the leaves whole for overwintering insects.

A frosty start to the day

I’m a morning person, and the early sunrise is nice, but I’m not looking forward to 4:30 sunset🙃
