Gray squirrels here, but they love to perch and leave the hulls behind in neat piles

A hard frost this morning. 22 degrees Fahrenheit. #mawx

A hard frost this morning with a temp of 24°. The herbaceous perennial layer has withered to brown sticks while the larch still hangs onto its yellow needles.

Larch, also known as Tamarack (Larix larincina) with its iconic yellow needles, a deciduous conifer. #nativeplants #ecoregion59

After months of being offline, I finally figured out how to reconnect my weather station to WiFi😊 just in time for winter

The Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) did not survive the most recent freeze. It was cold enough (and for a long enough duration) to freeze over the bird bath.

It took me exactly 33 mins to get home by ebike. If only the Mass Central Rail Trail could be plowed throughout the winter.. #onelesscar

Still some decent fall foliage around the yard, especially in the shrub and herbaceous layer. Some notable trees that hang onto their leaves: Bigtooth Aspen, Chestnut Oak, Larch (tamarack)

Last night was incredible, full on shadows because the moon was so bright

It’s a beautiful day for a “fall cleanup”

I don’t remove a single leaf from the property. All get distributed in the beds, used as insulation in my nursery, and remnant scraps are mulched into the remaining lawn, a last resort, as I try to keep the leaves whole for overwintering insects.

A frosty start to the day

I’m a morning person, and the early sunrise is nice, but I’m not looking forward to 4:30 sunset🙃

Imagine being so car brained, you expect the driver of a vehicle and a young child crossing the street to share the same responsibilities

If that were the case, we wouldn’t have multiple kids dying on our streets, every day.
November 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM
Hate to break it to you, but kids ARE forced into the streets. If that front lawn had a retaining wall, no stroller will fit through there.
