I wrote a piece 20 years ago about why Rwanda intervened in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1996 and again in 1998. The motivations I noted then continue to drive Rwanda's support for M23 today:
-Ethnic solidarity
-Security concerns
-Economic interests
-Political triumphalism

Remarkable how many new big infrastructure projects in Africa replicate the colonial-era model of connecting mines to ports (and nowhere else).
Tanzania and Burundi sign agreement with two Chinese firm to build a 282Km-long US$2.15Bn railway between the countries for transporting battery mineral nickel to the Dar es Salaam port.
Tanzania, Burundi sign deal with China to build nickel-carrying SGR
The two nations expect the 282 kilometre (175 mile) standard gauge line to transport three million metric tonnes of minerals annually

I spoke to @spiegel.de on why conflicts in eastern Congo are so intractable and why the current escalation is highly worrying and needs a serious reckoning with the underlying, often under-appreciated political drivers.

What is happening in the Gezira, the systematic and targeted killings of South Sudanese and members of Kanabi communities by SAF shows us very clearly that they too alongside the RSF, are the oppressors. They always have been and they will never liberate Sudan!

I think might be hard for other folks to understand the community-wide trauma Jews are feeling in relation to the Hamas attacks. It’s because the phrase “existential threat” is not a euphemism for us. For us, it means exactly what the words imply.

People have asked me over the past few days how I'm doing, especially with all my family being over there. Most of the time I have no answer. I'm both horrified about what has unfolded thus far and worried about what's to come. Check in on your Israeli and Palestinian colleagues.

As an advocate for human rights, I'm opposed to targeting civilians. No matter which side in a conflict, no matter what has been done, there is no justification for targeting civilians.

This shouldn't be controversial, and yet sadly it is.
