I remember casually telling my mom that I really wanted more music for Christmas this year and that I had REALLY enjoyed things like Kenny G's "Gravity" in earlier years. My parents trusted the lists and never really seemed to care what we listened to at all, so long as it was "church approved".

Whittier likely conflated the various stories, either by accident or deliberately. At that time, Frederick was best-known as the home of Francis Scott Key, a local lawyer who had written the "Star Spangled Banner". So the town was already nationally-associated with being VERY into flags.

Fritchie really WAS an avowed Unionist and was known to brandish a union flag at military leaders from both armies at different times, but it is likely that the event never occurred as-written (she was 90 years old at the time of the notorious "Ransoming of Fredericktown" and died soon after).

Whittier was an abolitionist and was VERY well-known in my hometown because of another poem he wrote about local heroine Barbara Fritchie, who was famous for (reportedly) daring Stonewall Jackson to kill her after she put herself between his troops and a Union flag they had been shooting at.

The idea of putting a candle into a decoratively pumpkin, specifically, seems to have become popular in the US in the early 1800s, but was ORIGINALLY associated with harvest/Thanksgiving festivities.
The first written reference is in a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier from 1807, entitled "Pumpkin":
