How do I make regime theory exciting for IR undergraduates? Apparently it’s not by explaining the Coase Theorem in detail.

Yesterday I was teaching my usual unit on state terrorism in a class I have offered since 2015. I asked students for some examples of state terrorism and they immediately pivoted to ICE. They came up with it on their own and it’s all they wanted to talk about.

"The majority of them failed to meet ICE’s physical or academic standards, according to the data."
NBC News finds that:
-- ICE has shortened its training from 13 weeks to six.
-- Nearly half of recruits couldn’t pass an open-book written exam.
-- Recruits "are supposed to attest" they can pass the physical-fitness test, which requires them to run ... 6 mph.

⁦‪I spoke with @onofftherecord.bsky.social ‬⁩ about the collapse of the Stop Cop City RICO prosecution. Georgia politicians had a legitimacy problem & tried to fix it by indicting their critics. The problem is, even to abuse the law, you have to read it first. They didn’t.

Good news! A judge has thrown out most of the Cop City RICO indictment! Georgia’s AG lacked authority to bring Counts 1 & 3, accounting for most of the defendants. The state will appeal & a subset of defendants still face terrorism charges, but this win is something to celebrate.
The Cop City RICO is in crisis. Judge Farmer plans to throw out the bulk of the case on the reasoning that the Georgia Attorney General's office was not invited by the Fulton DA (Fani Willis) to bring the case, so it lacks constitutional authority to prosecute.
