I had the opportunity this winter to spend time with 23-year-old EJ Beck. When EJ was 10, a doctor found thyroid cancer on her neck. After a complicated surgery and a radiation treatment, Beck today is cancer free & currently a medical student on a path to helping others. Photographed for @npr.org

So how do you stop people from shoplifting?
“You’d have to get drugs out of the picture,” he said. But more practically: “Bigger security guards. I see a big security guard, I don’t go in.”
