Four-leaf clover or parasite? 🤔

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the fish and bird lab! Pictured is a tapeworm called Rhinebothrium that was found in a stingray by MSMS student Sarah Sargent who is studying the parasite communities of two stingray species! 🍀

Yesterday our lab PI got a call from Hollywood about a large great hammerhead (GHH) shark on the beach... and do we want it for the lab? Not the first time we've gotten calls like this! Here is a short thread about what fish biologists can do with even a dead animal. (Warning: graphic images) 1/11

On a separate note, today is Penguin Awareness Day. I had the privilege of working with the critically endangered African penguin for 2+ years. Unfortunately, we’ve already lost over 97% of the population due to habitat loss, lack of food availability, climate change, etc. They deserve protection!

Today, we could have inaugurated the first black female president into office on MLK Day. Instead, we inaugurated the oligarchy. It’s an absolute slap in the face to everyone who has fought for democracy.

Take time to reflect and grieve, but then we have work to do.
