Liverpool, politics, theatre, wine, cricket, travel, Eurovison, family, republican (in the UK sense not US) - and more. Wry observations. General disdainment.
Flyer sent from theatre in Milton Keynes advertising their panto.

Photos of 12 cast members / dancers. Eleven men (one in panto drag) and one woman.

Don't think we'll take our six-year-old daughter, then.

Seriously, in 2025?

Starmer needs to sack the cabinet secretary this evening. No room or need for delay.

A "perverse" and deeply immoral policy. Labour have misjudged this so badly.
November 18, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Shameful.

Labour have utterly lost the moral plot.

The end of The Times obituary of Rachel Cooke is quite brilliant, and unbearably sad.

So 0-0 is a positive start?!!

Not very responsible budgeting to be £10bn out...

I give it two weeks from the current "ooo, turkey, exciting" to "I'm so bored of turkey"...

Worst renovation in London? The beautiful, classy Palm Court in the art deco Sheraton Grand Park Lane has been turned into something akin to a cheap airport lounge - with lighting so glaringly bright it's giving me a headache!

Other than eight minutes for a lunch break, I've not had a moment to pause for breath today. This will help.

The royal family, eh?

I only discovered two years ago that my great- great- grandfather was killed in WWI. We visited his grave last summer. He's not been far from my thoughts today.

Beautiful Edinburgh sunrise from the balcony of my hotel room this morning.

No better view.

Christmas cake in the oven - early, so it's done before a lunchtime K-Pop party for the six-year-old.

Now for the annual dilemma - just throw the treacle out now, or keep it in the back of a cupboard and throw it out next year...

Up in the gods for Mary Poppins in MK this afternoon. Fabulous special effects and choreography. But goodness it needed cutting by about half an hour, and felt like a very dated style of musical theatre.

Still, Mary flying over the audience at the end was a stunning, memorable moment.

The new Monica Galetti x Itsu instant noodles elevate fast home food to a new level. Absolutely superb.

This would be comical if it wasn't so ridiculous. But it's hardly fair to blame Labour for the calamitous state of prisons after the Tories systematically ran down the system for 14 years.

20 years? I've still not quite got over reading it when it was published! One of the great masterpieces from IMHO our greatest living author.

Great that the need to #AbolishTheMonarchy makes front-page news in mainstream left-wing discussion. Even if the article presents a relatively weak argument for the republican cause, the debate can't now be ignored.

Labour's loyalty should be to the people - not to one entitled, unelected family.

Picked up this strange collection of Ian Fleming travel pieces from the Sunday Times. If xenophobia, racism, sexism and antisemitism are your things, add it to your Christmas list.

Most interesting fact: he was only 56 when he died.

Halloween - a big night for our little black cat!

The arrogance and entitlement of the royal family, writ large.

It's time for a serious conversation about whether we should #AbolishTheMonarchy, and it needs to start while Mr Charles Mountbatten Windsor is in post.

Dear goodness... and for his daughter's 18th birthday party too.

I've seen Suzanne Vega live more times than I can remember, and I don't think I've ever seen her perform better than in Cambridge this evening.
