At the airport to pick up my new PhD student arriving from Brazil.
Warsaw is welcoming her with a typical wintry drizzle, sleet and grey skies and grey streets. I wouldn’t blame her if she got right back on the plane again.

CHRISTMAS WITCHER CHRISTMAS WITCHER
Companions of Christmas: MERCURIUS ABU-SIFIN

Today (November 25) is the feast day of this Scythian-Romano soldier saint, who wields two swords: one with which to fight evil men, the other, given to him by the Archangel Michael, with which to fight demons, evil spirits, and monsters. 1/

Small interview study looks into why many immigrants to Sweden don't vote in general elections. One common reply was "I don't know enough about Swedish politics to make an informed choice."

That's admirable, but you know what? NO SUCH CONSIDERATIONS ARE STOPPING EQUALLY IGNORANT PEOPLE FROM […]

TIL that "aluminium" in Polish does not actually mean aluminium!
I knew that the standard word for the element Al is "glin", but you hear the word aluminium all the time, especially in its adjevtive form, e.g. folia aluminiowa. So, I thought they were synonyms. But pedantically they're not.

Oh wow! This is what happens when you're photographing MSS & don't capture the text in the inner gutter. 1st, here's the photograph (made about 100 yrs ago) of the Codex Salernitanus, f. 82ra. Although that big tear of the page is obvious, the inner gutter hasn't been fully captured in the photo.

Well, it doesn’t really fill me with confidence that Poland barely managed to eke out a victory against Malta - ranked 166 out 210 nations.
Poland has won its final Group G World Cup 2026 qualifier match against Malta 2–3. The result boosts their position ahead of the playoff draw.

79-year-old Paul Bojerski was born to Polish parents in a WWII German refugee camp. His family legally emigrated to the U.S. when he was 5.

He’s been taken by ICE in Florida.

Meanwhile >23 people have died in traffic in Warsaw so far this year (a month ago). But Warsaw is more than three times as populated as Helsinki, so scaling the Finnish number will give… oh well.

Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

As someone who’s commuted by bike for >30 years I don’t feel the need for an e-bike. But they get people who otherwise would drive to cycle, so I’m all for it!

But I do have strong issues on delivery guys on superfast e-bikes riding with complete disregard for others.
