Although, technically värre, värst come from the word illa meaning evil. Though the positive form is rarely used now.

To be honest, I never really reflected on the difference. I’m Swedish, so when to use which is natural to me but I never really thought about how confusing it is that they have the same positive form.

It's may not ne quite as bad as it looks, since the minimum salary is before tax, and the stipend is tax free. On the other hand, people under 26 pay no income tax in Poland. So, for most first year PhD students, it is as bad as it looks...

Śniadecki is also responsible for establishing (if not actually naming) other Polish names of elements, such as wodór (H), węgiel (C), krzem (Si)...

The name glin was introduced in the 19th century and was included in Jędrzej Śniadecki's famous book "Początki Chemii", that formed the basis of Polish chemical terminology. Originally, Śniadecki called Al glinian, but apparently it never stuck. The word comes from glina = clay.

Instead, "aluminium" is the technical grade of the element "glin". When talking about the element, such as in the formula Al₂O₃, we use glin, tlenek glinu, but all things made of Al are really from "aluminium" - the technical material, the real stuff is you will, as opposed to the ideal glin.
