Fb reminds me that this day in 2018 was one of the first (the actual first?) public hearings we organized turnout and testimony for. We made little flyers. Maybe we printed them at the library, I can’t even remember.
A half sheet of paper with these words: Reclaim the Block: Fund communities, not cops Mayor Frey's proposed 2019 Budget prioritizes funding the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) above the needs of the people living in our city. We've invested in criminalizing our communities instead of supporting them for too long—it's time for a change. We call on the City Council to: • Fund our communities, not more cops. The proposed budget includes more than $1 million to hire new civilian MPD employees in order to put eight more officers on our streets, while failing to renew funding for a series of innovative 2018 community-led safety programs. • Invest in affordable housing instead of covering up police violence. The budget would double funding for a "Community and Collaborative Advancement Program" at MPD. But MPD has had 150 years to build trust in our city, and hasn't succeeded yet. Let's put that money towards the most urgent needs in our community, like housing and addiction services. • Divest 5% from MPD's budget and chart a new course for community safety. The budget invests about 3x more money in police than in affordable housing and health combined, while our city faces colossal racial disparities in housing, education, and economic opportunity. #fundcommunitiesnotcops #reclaimtheblock

The city covered our fire hydrant with a weird sack of some kind and my wife said it needed googly eyes. Very tempted to actually do this.

My retired professor of Old Testament from undergrad (one of the dudes that really challenged me throughout that Pentecostal degree) posted this meme and it really made me laugh.

Last RT from @arobertswrites.com reminds me of “Womanist Midrash,” where Dr. @wilgafney.bsky.social reveals that this kind of thing occurs right in the Hebrew creation story.

I was looking through my LinkedIn notification settings to see if there's any way to turn off the email they send every time I sign into my account asking me to verify my device, and apparently they have games?? Naturally I'm turning that off, but again... LinkedIn has games?
a screen on a LinkedIn settings page. There's a toggle (enabled by default, naturally) about whether to allow game notifications. Below that, there's a way to presumably choose push notifications, in-app notifications, or both.

This part of the lineage of abolition where I’ve found my own homes — deeply informed by abolition feminism, I would say — has always been one of the treasures for me. Something to hold onto that’s moving toward freedom.

And so I think the both and part of abolition feminism really comes from the way that it’s alive and it’s living and it’s experimental and it changes over time, but it gives us something to kind of wrap ourselves in or hold onto as something that’s moving in a direction toward freedom. Asia, Africa, and Latin America were not referred to in NCBC documents until the end of the 1960s, when the Third World was mentioned in a cursory manner. The same was true of other interpreters of black theology. It was as if we were blind to the global nature of human oppression. Martin King was miles ahead of us on that issue; and it is ironic that many of us thought he was too conservative! The fact is that he was in many ways too radical, because he was moving toward an economic analysis, and some say even Marxism." The reason why King was and still is more radical than the clergy of the NCBC and other interpreters of black theology was the integrity of his commitment and the depth of his analysis. Commitment without analysis leads to romanticism and eventually to despair. Analysis without commitment leads to oppor tunism and eventually to a betrayal of one's people. The black community needs black theologians who have both a commitment to their people's liberation and the intellectual expertise needed to analyze the nature of their oppression.”

On this day in 2018, as part of that year’s MN Poor People’s Campaign, @propheticimage.bsky.social held an action in Mayor Frey’s office called “Beloved Community Means No Police.” We built a grave in his office for victims of police violence.
