We still have multiple respiratory disease epidemics and pandemics on our hands - especially among those who are not rich in this country. This combined with smoke inhalation could be deadly - add poverty and mass incarceration to the mix, the picture gets worse.

Doesn't work for modern Europe, but there's a polio story that is not just about vaccine success, but also about how polio research transformed modern university funding by leading to the development of indirect funds, the lifeblood of the R1.
