What these photos don't entirely convey: Both of these men were the kindest, gentlest souls you'd ever care to meet. They endowed their family with a legacy of compassion. I'm enormously proud of them, not only for their service, but for who they were.

In 1937, Dick bought a bottle of champagne to be consumed by the last two surviving members of the Bicycle Battalion. He himself consumed it, with Billy Richardson, in 1993. Died in 96 @ 100.

"I don't look dressed for the air but still that is a second item. The mechanics seem unusually busy. Quite unnecessary though" Again with mollifying the women at home! My grandfather dressed, more or less, for flight, next to his pride & joy.

And what was revealed was fascinating. I'm paraphrasing, but something like "This is what happens when you stall on 'take-off' [I remember the quotes--he's using airman jargon which hasn't entered the vocabulary yet!] Don't worry, he was fine". Uh huh. I'm pretty sure that was a little white lie.

This photo was glued down in an old, black-paper photo album. I decided to take the risk of peeling it off--and the black paper came with it, obscuring what was written. Now, I know enough about darkrooms to know that photos get soaked when they're developing. So I took a chance, and soaked it...
